Bandette Vol. 1: Presto! by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover

Bandette #1. Dark Horse Books (Nov. 2013) Library
She is ALLURING

She is MYSTERIOUS

She is BANDETTE!

The world's greatest thief is a costumed teen burglar by thenome d'arte of Bandette! Gleefully plying her skills on either side of the law alongside her network of street urchins, Bandette is a thorn in the side of both Police Inspector Belgique and the criminal underworld. But it's not all breaking hearts and purloining masterpieces when a rival thief makes a startling discovery. Can even Bandette laugh off a plot against her life?

Bandette was such a treat. Like the introduction in the story said, carefree is the perfect description for Bandette. Bandette felt like a very old-timey character in that she was so invincible to anything bad happening to her and she faced danger with a smile on her lips.

I couldn't help hear Bandette in this funny french accent that we all know from movies. Her adventures are extremely dangerous. Her love of books is relatable. And her thievery is only matched by her rival, Monsieur.

I enjoyed the plot of the story and getting into Bandette's world. She's actually a very good person even helping the police (Although, the police inspector Belgique would rather put her in jail I'm sure) with a hostage situation. It was a little tough to get into her world because I didn't realize how the way she acts, invincible, is not really an act. I was so astounded when she brought in her "street urchins" - regular people - who would help her out when she needed it. Bandette is always in danger so I never got how she allowed her friends to be in harm's way. But the way the story is written is that this girl can't get harmed. She has a plan for any situation. No one is going to get hurt. Even with that in the back of my mind I couldn't help but worry over our main and secondary characters.

One of the secondary characters is Daniel who is hopelessly in love with Bandette. He supplies her with chocolates whenever she asks and will never say no to her which she basically takes advantage of. It's in such a lighthearted way that I don't see it as a bad thing especially when she calls him her handsome delivery boy.

One of the things I wish was in the story was more of the main plot. I did appreciate learning about Daniel meeting our heroine in the short comics after the story is technically over. There are a lot of little stories at the end that are so much fun. One character that I wish had her own comic or who I want to learn even more about other than in the little comic featuring her is Matadori. Matadori is as fearless as Bandette but is with the villains and doesn't quite have Bandette's skill. She still has such promise in her and she's just a funny little character with a quirky personality like Bandette.

Overall, Bandette was a very carefree, lighthearted, and daring read.
